Why I Travel Now Instead of Waiting for Retirement
My wife and I have been traveling more lately, and we’ve been asked more than once if we’re retired, retiring early, or why we’re spending so much time traveling now.
The traditional model has always been pretty simple: work hard, save your money, retire, and then see the world. But for us, waiting another ten years feels like a gamble I’m not willing to take.
We’re roughly ten years away from retirement, and in an uncertain world, putting off experiences that matter to us just doesn’t feel right. I want to travel while I can still carry my own luggage, walk five miles from a cruise port to a beach, hike mountain trails, and fully enjoy everything this world has to offer.
One of the greatest gifts we’ve been given is flexibility. My wife and I can work from almost anywhere. As long as we have Wi-Fi, we can balance work and adventure, enjoying the best of both worlds.
My mom passed away at 78. I’m 59 now. When you do the math, it becomes impossible not to think about time differently. There is so much I want to do over the next twenty years, and seeing more of the world is at the top of that list.
The funny thing is, not that long ago, I never imagined I’d want to travel internationally. I always thought there was more than enough to see right here in the United States. Then my wife and I booked our first cruise, I got my first passport, and suddenly everything changed.
The world got bigger.
Cruising opened doors I didn’t even know existed. While most of our travels so far have been throughout the Caribbean and Bahamas, I’ve realized that even those destinations are a world unto themselves. Every island has its own personality, culture, food, beaches, and stories.
And honestly? I don’t think I can overstate how much I love cruising.
The idea of unpacking once and waking up in a new destination every few days still amazes me. How did I go more than fifty years without experiencing this?
We’ve been sailing on a cruise line known for attracting mature travelers, and I love the atmosphere. Sure, my wife and I are often among the younger guests onboard, but what inspires me most is watching couples who are older than us continue to explore. Some move a little slower. Some use scooters. But they’re still out there. They’re still seeing new places, making memories, and living fully.
That’s exactly what I want for our future.
I want us to keep exploring well into our golden years.
But I don’t want to wait until then to start.
So my advice is simple:
Travel now.
Book the trip.
Take the chance.
Make the memories.
Because one day you’ll never regret the places you saw, the sunsets you chased, or the experiences you shared with the people you love.
The only thing you might regret is waiting too long to begin.
